Naturally, I would prefer private child care by a loving, retired gardener, but have come to realize she's already watching her own grandchildren! I am basically looking for what all moms are looking for in a center: a clean, safe, undercrowded, happy, fun, and nurturing environment that employs educated, silly, cheerful, patient caregivers. How can I find one?"

MOMBASICS replies: The first place I'd start looking for childcare is your state government web site. Since states license child care centers (depending upon size of center), you should find a section on licensed child care providers on the state web site. // Check local parenting magazines and newspapers for ads; ask preschools for recommendations; and of course, ask every parent you know who they---or their friends---recommend. Hang out at the playground to get answers! There are several women in my area who provide day care; it's mostly word-of-mouth and reputation that will help you find the smaller child care providers. // Towns, cities, and regions often have parenting or mother groups with childcare information but these are usually volunteer organizations so they may be harder to find. Some may not have web sites either, but you should start with a web search, ask your local librarian, ask other parents, etc. if there is a local parenting group. Also check out the Support Groups on www.mombasics.com for links. Some of these groups create annual childcare resources. // Another place to get referrals for childcare would be any kid-centered or kid-friendly businesses...such as your pediatrician's office, OB/GYN office. // If you belong to a local group email, post your request for childcare there. You can find groups by searching by town or city name (for example, "Bedford MA") on http://groups.yahoo.com or http://groups.google.com.
