I like the American Girl doll series. These are good quality (but not cheap!) dolls. Besides the storybook or historical character dolls, you can purchase dolls that look like you (or not!), with such variations as skin color, eye color, hair color, type of hair, etc. These dolls are labeled for ages 8 and up, but my 5yo daughter inherited one from her 12yo cousin, and she loves having a big sister doll for her baby dolls. We also have a Bitty Baby doll. The clothes are amazing! My daughter puts the AG clothes on all her babies and on some stuffed animals too. The ballet outfits, the ballgowns are just so pretty. Some of the accessories are amazing too. We have the AG of the year (what year, I don't know) Lindsey, who came with a soccer suit and a Razor scooter!

American Girl's marketing and design teams truly know their audience and know how to keep you buying. There's always a Doll of the Year and a bunch of new accessories (clothes, beds, carriages, horses, toys, tables, everything!). Plus, there's the American Girl Place, boutique stores, events, books, a movie, a magazine, and girl-sized clothes and accessories too. Man oh man, I wish I came up with this moneymaker! That said, the American Girl series does promote a positive image for girls---and for that, I applaud them. (Barbie is a different story!)
