When uploading your digital photos to your computer, change the file names so you know the date and occasion of the event. For instance, I label my daughter's birthday party pictures as: 0309birthday-001, 0309birthday-002, etc. The 0309 is the month and year (March 2009), birthday is the event, and the last numbers represent the photo number in the series. I then have different folders under My Pictures for each year, so one folder is called 2008, 2009, etc. It works well for the slideshow feature as well as finding photos. Plus, I no longer accidentally overwrite photos, which can happen when you don't change the photo file name the camera has given each picture (such as CIMD057).

Does anyone know where there is a safe website for downloading safe ebooks online? Right now I'm only interested in children's books, but later it would be nice to find adult and educational books also. I need the book, "The Westing Game", by Ellen Raskin for my 6th grader to take a computerized test at school. She read it in the 5th grade, but needs to refresh her memory. They're all checked out in the local libraries.

For your child's sake, write a will. Sure, we don't like to think of these "what if" scenarios, but wouldn't you rather choose your child's legal guardian than have the state pick one? We chose one person to be our daughter's guardian and another person to handle her inheritance, a good system for checks and balances.

Join a playgroup or start one yourself. My daughter and I joined a playgroup before she was two. We met weekly (summers too!) at each other's houses. Once the kids got into first grade, we started meeting once a month when the school scheduled half days. We sometimes met at night for ice cream socials too.
Not only do the children learn to socialize, but parents find support and friendship within the group. If you have a local parenting group, such as my town's Bedford Family Connections, it's smart to join and reap the benefits, including help with forming playgroups. If there's no parenting group near you, contact one of these networks below.

Get a special treat for your birthday! Lots of restaurants have birthday clubs and email coupons for your special day. For the last few years, we've gone to Not Your Average Joe's restaurant on my birthday, where I'm treated with a free entree and a free dessert. Now how's that for feeling special? Visit your favorite restaurants online and sign up for those special emails today. Some stores also have birthday clubs where you get free gifts, discounts, free shipping, or other benefits. Macy's online offered me free shipping for my birthday month.

Write a journal about your pregnancy, about baby's first years. You don't have to write a page a day, just scribble down whatever milestone or feeling or adventure as it comes.

Prenatal yoga classes build strength and relieve stress. It's nice to be with a group of women of all shapes and sizes, all preparing physically and mentally to go through childbirth. I had never done yoga before, and now I'm hooked. I took Mommy & Baby yoga classes and now I go to the "adult" yoga classes by myself.

Take childbirth classes, breastfeeding classes, baby care classes, pediatric first aid classes. Some things you can't learn from a book. Besides learning from others' experiences, you may meet other parents-to-be from your area and start a friendship and/or form a playgroup.

Buying a membership means much more than "free" trips to your local museum or zoo. Check out these sites to find local organizations that participate in reciprocal programs, allowing you free entrance (or discounts) at other related places around the country or even within your state.
Association of Children's Museums: Check to see if your local museum participates in the ACM Reciprocal Program that gives access to 100+ children's museums. (http://childrensmuseums.org)
Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) Travel Passport Program: Access to science centers and museums, usually 90+ miles from originating member museum. (http://www.astc.org/)
Association of Zoos and Aquariums: reciprocal programs. Check originating member zoo/aquarium to see which places are on the reciprocal list. (http://www.aza.org/FindZooAquarium/)
Not all museums and zoos are members.

After your journey, organize your digital photos. I've broken down My Pictures folder by years (2006, 2007) and sometimes the year folders into seasons or big events. But my most important tip is to rename all picture file names by date, location or event, and photo number. For example, 0407disney01.jpg means: 0407 = April 2007; disney = location or event; 01 = photo number. The nice thing is that you can create a chronological slideshow easily and know when and where the picture was taken.

Several years ago, the local parenting group (with children ages 0-5) started an open gym program. On Sundays, parents and their kids could come to the high school gym with soft balls and toys, run around, get some exercise, and have some fun. It became so popular that the town recreation department now sponsors the program every Sunday during the winter months. Our high school has several gyms so the space was divided. Here's how our program works: 1:00 to 4:00 pm: Gyms A & B open to all residents; 1:00 to 2:30pm: Gym D dedicated to children who find the large open gym environment over-stimulating. It is expected that parents will remain with their children in this gym. This slot is co-sponsored by the Special Education Parents Advisory Council. 2:30 to 4:00 pm: Gym D dedicated to preschoolers and their parents (no drop-offs). Parents must stay with children ages 7 and under. If parents are not planning to stay with children ages 8+, children must be registered with the town recreation department in advance for Open Gym. There is no fee for Open Gym, but the department must have a list of the children with emergency contact information. It's a great place to play a game of pick-up basketball, learn to dribble the soccer ball, jump rope, or run around.

Before you go, check for travel and health advisories. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) U.S. government site has lots of info at http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/default.aspx. Some hospitals and medical practices offer Travel Clinics, which will give you vaccinations and travel tips for your specific destination and travel itinerary. We visited a travel clinic at our local hospital for a Caribbean Islands trip, got some shots and helpful information.

Bring cash! When negotiating price for jewelry in a Mexican resort town, the seller asked how we would be purchasing the item. He said the Visa and Mastercard companies charge stores about 3% of the sale (same in USA I believe) but American Express charges his store 20%. If we paid with cash, he wouldn't have to add on those fees. However, he did lower the price because we accepted a deal with part cash and part credit card. (Guess the sales tax in Mexico is rather steep and the cash wasn't all being reported.)

My friend Renee and I started a book club. Every five weeks, a group of local women meet for a couple of hours to discuss books and life. It's been great fun and a great way to meet people (or get to know them better). You can tell a lot about a person by what books they read. Some of our favorites are:
Kim Edwards: The Memory Keeper's Daughter Jodi Picoult: Salem Falls Kristy Kiernan: Catching Genius Janine Latus: If I Am Missing or Dead Nancy Horan: Loving Frank
I've also been reading (and recommend) the following: Deanna Raybourn: Silent in the Grave Jodi Picoult: Plain Truth Ann Packer: The Dive from Clausen's Pier Tracy Chevalier: Girl with a Pearl Earring Tess Gerritson: The Bone Garden

I received an email yesterday from a company asking me to join their mystery shopper network. This company was listed in Inc. magazine's top 5000 companies list (URL provided). So, if I'd reply to this email with my full name, address, and phone number, I could start making money. That was red flag #1, and a typical phishing ploy, to ask for identifying information from a stranger (after all, the email was not addressed to me personally). Red flag #2: "Please encourage your family, friends and colleagues to register by responding to this email" by providing the same identifying details. (This is just like chain letters, asking you to forward the email to everyone you know.) Red flag #3: The name of the company was legitimate, but the sender's email address was not exactly the same as what I'd expect the URL to be. (Chcek the email Properties to see where that email originated from.) Red flag #4: the sender's name had a lowercase letter for the start of the surname. Any business person would check to see how their name appeared in the From field.
If you get an email like this, do not click on the links, respond, or forward the email! I did a Google search on the company name to see what showed up. I checked the www.whois.com database to see who owned the URLs listed, to see if the email address and the company URL were registered to the same company, but neither were listed. I checked a few hoaxbusters web sites and www.snopes.com to check the legitimacy of the offer as well. This phishing scam was not listed! So I contacted the real company (I searched for its URL at www.inc.com) and they confirmed the email was a scam. Then I posted the scam on www.breakthechain.org and emailed spam@uce.gov because it's relatively new.
BTW, there are legitimate mystery shopper companies out there. Check out the professional trade association at www.mysteryshop.org.

Mine is stocked with a first aid kit (including instant ice packs), boxes of raisins, individual bags of pretzels, Capri Sun juices (somehow its packaging allows the juice to feel cool even when it's hot out), paper napkins, extra straws, hand wipes, a small roll of toilet paper, a blanket, plastic bags, an atlas, and a bookbag with coloring books, crayons, and a pad of paper. I also keep my canvas shopping bags in the trunk, so I always remember to bring them with me. They've been handy on trips too, like coming home from Grandma's house after the holidays.
