mombasics photo file organizing 0 Mar 31 2009, 11:06 AM EDT by mombasics

When uploading your digital photos to your computer, change the file names so you know the date and occasion of the event. For instance, I label my daughter's birthday party pictures as: 0309birthday-001, 0309birthday-002, etc. The 0309 is the month and year (March 2009), birthday is the event, and the last numbers represent the photo number in the series. I then have different folders under My Pictures for each year, so one folder is called 2008, 2009, etc. It works well for the slideshow feature as well as finding photos. Plus, I no longer accidentally overwrite photos, which can happen when you don't change the photo file name the camera has given each picture (such as CIMD057).

Here's a list to start: play a card or board game; read a book together outloud; camp out in your living room, with sleeping bags, popcorn, and scary stories; learn a new sport or activity together; take a walk or hike; have a jumping jacks contest; have a relay race with other families; eat dinner out---kid's choice; eat dinner backwards, starting with dessert; bake cookies; make ice cream sundaes; make your own pizza; tell family stories; do a family history/genealogy project, like interview each other; have a block party with neighbors on your street; create a story book together with each person adding a sentence and see where it ends; research an exotic locale or an animal together; go to a zoo or a museum; collect & donate food for the local food pantry; go through old clothes, toys, and books and donate them to a worthy charity; volunteer at a soup kitchen; work together on a charity project like Habitat for Humanity, a park cleanup project, or Toys for Tots; etc.

What are your ideas?

mombasics hydrogen peroxide to the rescue! or dogs deskunked 0 Nov 13 2008, 9:55 AM EST by mombasics

My friend's golden retriever was sprayed by a skunk weeks ago and had two professional deskunking shampoo treatments and she still smelled. The other night, my daughter and I were watching FETCH! With Ruff Ruffman on PBS. (Great show!) One of the challenges was to get rid of skunk smell. So the kids took four tube socks and put drops of skunk spray on each. One sock was the control sock and didn't get treated. Tomato juice was poured on the second sock. It smelled better than the control, but still smelled. Cologne was sprayed on the third sock, which sort of covered the scent but didn't improve it. (Sort of like cologne trying to mask body odor!) Then a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide was used on the fourth sock, and the smell disappeared. Now I'm not sure what ratio you use to make the mixture, but the oxygen in the hydrogen peroxide lifts the smelly molecules or something like that. Ruff used the mixture, but he's just a cartoon animal. And you may need a gallon or so of hydrogen peroxide to do it, but it sounded like a good idea! Obviously, the mixture would be good for other smelly things (like socks), which is probably what Oxy-Clean is made from.
