For 20+ years (since my first apartment after college!), I have used canvas bags for all my grocery shopping. I have 8 bags in total and I haven't needed to purchase new ones. My trick is to always keep the canvas bags in the trunk of my car so that I never forget them. These bags never rip or break; they hold tons of food; they're easy to carry (even up three flights of stairs!); and I don't have to worry about throwing them away or finding a recycling place to take them.

Some grocery stores give me a 5 cent credit for each bag and at Trader Joe's I'm entered into a $25 raffle every month for using cloth bags.
