Several years ago, the local parenting group (with children ages 0-5) started an open gym program. On Sundays, parents and their kids could come to the high school gym with soft balls and toys, run around, get some exercise, and have some fun. It became so popular that the town recreation department now sponsors the program every Sunday during the winter months. Our high school has several gyms so the space was divided. Here's how our program works: 1:00 to 4:00 pm: Gyms A & B open to all residents; 1:00 to 2:30pm: Gym D dedicated to children who find the large open gym environment over-stimulating. It is expected that parents will remain with their children in this gym. This slot is co-sponsored by the Special Education Parents Advisory Council. 2:30 to 4:00 pm: Gym D dedicated to preschoolers and their parents (no drop-offs). Parents must stay with children ages 7 and under. If parents are not planning to stay with children ages 8+, children must be registered with the town recreation department in advance for Open Gym. There is no fee for Open Gym, but the department must have a list of the children with emergency contact information. It's a great place to play a game of pick-up basketball, learn to dribble the soccer ball, jump rope, or run around.

In Bedford, the Youth & Family Services department wants to find a dedicated space for a Youth Center because they know how critical it is for kids to have a place to hang out. The Council on Aging (COA) has great facilities, including a cafeteria and a recreational space where COA members can participate in the many different activities planned throughout the week (genealogy classes, tai chi and other exercises, sing-alongs, bridge games, etc). Sure, there are sports and other after-school activities for kids, but not everyone can afford to participate. So what types of programs and facilities do you have in your town or city for youth?
